Yoga Teacher Training
June Mitchell qualified as a yoga teacher in the Sivananda method in l976/77 under the tuition and guidance of William Mowat Thompson, Founder/Principal of the Scottish Yoga Centre, Edinburgh and Dr. Arthur de la Poer Rowbothem, Psychiatrist, Philosopher and Vedantist. Her certificate in Hatha Raja Yoga was given ‘With Merit’ in the first yoga teacher training course held in Scotland. She continued further training with many of the country’s leading Sivananda and Iyengar teachers during the seventies and eighties, combining yoga teaching and study with raising her two sons born in l979 and l98O.
In l98l she launched Perth Yoga Centre, the second of its kind to be established in Scotland after the Scottish Yoga Centre in Edinburgh. Perth Yoga Centre created a foundation for the flourishing of complementary medicine in the area during the l98O’s, initiating the first-ever workshops and teaching groups in many aspects of this now established and significant part of our health awareness in Scotland. In l986 she set up the Anti-Stress Clinic in Perth which was well supported by the community and encouraged by local GPs. At this clinic there were various natural and holistic therapies given on a one-to-one basis. During this time June continued to develop her interest in the use of the Alexander Technique in her yoga teaching. In l987 she took a further one-year Certificated training course in Whole Person Healing with Dr. Mansukh Patel, Founder/Director of the LIFE Foundation School of Therapeutics, followed in l994 by another Certificated Course in Yoga Therapy for Low Back Pain through the Yoga Biomedical Trust in London and taught by Indian Orthopaedic Consultant and Yoga Teacher, Dr. D. G. Dongaonkar.
In l995 June founded the Riverside Centre in Perth where at any given time between ten and fifteen teachers and natural health therapists worked, offering holistic health treatments to the community and which was twice short-listed in the Business Excellence Awards initiated by the Perth Chamber of Commerce – seen as being innovative and influential in its field. Since l999 she has taught freelance in Perthshire, Dundee and in Glasgow where she and Julie Hanson now run the Chi Yoga Centre. In the Spring of 2OO3, furthering her enthusiasm for the Ashtanga Vinyasa system of yoga, she completed an Intensive Yoga Teacher training with Paul Dallaghan, Founder/Director of Centered Yoga, Yoga-Thailand and International Ashtanga Yoga Teacher, becoming the first person in the UK to have this worldclass training which has Yoga Alliance International Certification. She is also a direct student of the Ashtanga guru, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, having spent a month practicing in Mysore, Southern India in November/December 2OO4.
In 2OO3, with her friend and colleague, Julie Hanson, June established CYS Scotland, an Independent Yoga School offering the highest standards in yoga teacher training to enthusiastic yoga students ready to take this step on their yogic path. The first two year’s graduate CYS Scotland yoga teachers are now established in communities throughout the country and in the U.S., sharing their expertise and knowledge and can be found listed on the Teachers’ Register on the website. Following on the success of CYS Scotland, CYS London, is also now underway, the first course having begun in February 2OO6 at Beaumont House Conference Centre, Windsor.
CYS Scotland/London is backed by an authoritative and influential Governing Body of professionals from the fields of yoga and personal development and it is our wish and intention that it becomes known as a Centre of Excellence for the development of yoga teachers in communities throughout the country. CYS Scotland is a Registered Yoga School (RYS) with the International US-based Yoga Alliance giving our graduates the opportunity to teach worldwide.
